Executive Summary

The University of Calgary is one of Canada’s major research institutions. Through its inquiry-based teaching, research programs, and strategic and entrepreneurial partnerships, the University pursues knowledge and cultivates creativity and innovation in many fields. With a full-time enrolment of over 28,000 students in 2006, the University figures prominently in the government’s agenda of ensuring that Albertans are well-prepared for lifelong learning and are supported to reach their potential. The University has granted 125,583 degrees through 15 faculties offering more than 80 academic programs since itwas founded in 1966. In 2004, the provincial government granted the University of Calgary approval to develop its sixteenth faculty — the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. More than 30 research centres, institutes and groups with national and international affiliations support institutional activities. Significant additions in the past several years include the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy (ISEEE), the Markin Institute for Public Health, the Institute for Advanced Policy Research (IAPR), the Institute for Biocomplexity and Informatics and the Institute for Quantum Information Science.

The campus welcomes in excess of 125,000 visitors annually to lectures and to various sports events, its museums and to presentations in the arts. The University has been a significant contributor to the city’s economy from its inception and is Calgary’s fifth largest employer.
