Alumni Family Skate - Calgary - December 9, 2007

More than 375 alumni and their families celebrated the holiday season at the U of C's second annual Alumni Family Skate with Santa at the Olympic Oval on Sunday, December 9.

China Alumni Branch Launch - November 25, 2007

An official China alumni branch was launched on Nov. 25 with an opening ceremony attended by more than 40 alumni. They joined representatives from the Canadian Alumni Association in China, the Canadian Embassy and CNPC-Alberta Petroleum Centre, including several who travelled by plane or train to be part of the launch. University President Harvey Weingarten spoke to recent U of C developments and the important contributions from alumni.

U of C @ The Hour - Toronto - November 14, 2007

George Stroumboulopoulos, host of CBC’s Gemini award-winning show The Hour, received an honourary degree from the University of Calgary at Fall Convocation on November 13. To welcome George to our alumni family, 50 Toronto-area alumni attended a taping of The Hour at the CBC's national studio the next day. The alumni were warmly greeted by George who during the show spoke of his experience at Convocation and showed some footage from the ceremony.

November Convocation - November 23, 2007

The U of C's alumni family grew by more than 1,300 when Fall Convocation took place on November 13. George Stroumboulopoulos, the host of Canada's popular late night talk show The Hour, and pioneering energy leader Gwyn Morgan received honorary degrees.

MEng graduation and reception, Tehran - October 31, 2007

The first U of C alumni event ever held in Iran took place on Oct. 31 in Tehran following the second U of C graduation ceremony for 129 masters of engineering students from three petroleum engineering and project management programs. These unique programs offer some of the students a chance to study at U of C and others to study with U of C professors in Iran.

Ottawa Road Show - October 29, 2007

More than 50 alumni attended a reception at the National Arts Centre on October 29 to establish a U of C alumni branch in Ottawa. The newly-elected Ottawa branch executive, including President Jane Alkhouri and Treasurer Marc Khouri, have exciting ideas for future alumni events and are eager to get started. Ottawa alumni can look for more events and networking opportunities in the future.

Computer Science Chapter - October 4, 2007

Over 60 alumni turned up as the Computer Science Chapter hosted game developer and computer scientist Larry Mellon, BSc'89. Larry shared his experiences working with gaming giant Electronic Arts designing massively multiplayer online games.

U of C heads to Houston - September 17, 2007

More than 50 Houston-area alumni joined U of C President Dr. Harvey Weingarten, 2004 Graduate of the Last Decade Laura Lucier, and the American Friends of the U of C for a reception at Quattro, Houston's only Mobil Four Star restaurant, at the Four Seasons Houston on September 17.

KICKOFF.07 - September 7 & 8, 2007

KICKOFF.07, a two-day back-to-school celebration for the U of C community from the University, the Students' Union and the Alumni Association, launched with a pep rally for the Dinos and included a rock concert, a carnival-like tailgate barbecue, interactive faculty booths, tuition giveaways and the Dinos in action against the U of S Huskies.

Canadian Embassy, Beijing - August 10, 2007

Cen Huang, executive director of the U of C's International Centre, and David Wong, managing director of Alberta China Office, held a U of C alumni reception at the Canadian Embassy in Beijing on August 10. Among the 18 who attended, many expressed enthusiasm to establish a China alumni chapter.

Pub Night, London - July 5, 2007

London alumni enjoyed a second opportunity to gather in 2007 when they met at the Old Bank of England for a pub night. Dr. Tim Goddard, the U of C's Vice-Provost (International) was in town and was pleased to convey the latest news from their alma mater.

Silicon Valley Road Show - June 28, 2007

U of C alumni reconnected in Palo Alto, California on June 28th in conjunction with Canada Day celebrations hosted by the governments of Alberta and Canada. The room was filled with friends from the San Francisco Bay area who joined in the festivities as part of a trade mission to develop relationships within the technology sector.

2007 Arch Awards Gala Reception - June 14, 2007

The 2007 Arch Awards, held at the recently-rejuvenated Grand Theatre in downtown Calgary, was the U of C's best attended alumni awards ceremony in our 41-year history. More than 350 alumni, friends of the university, and supporters of our two Arch Award winners, Ken Storey, BSc'71, and Ravinder Minhas, BSc'05, can claim they had the hottest ticket in town for this gala reception.

Alumni Breakfast at Campus Fair - June 9, 2007

More than 300 alumni and their families attended the Alumni Breakfast prior to the U of C's Campus Fair on Saturday, June 9. Bacon, pancakes, coffee, orange juice and Celtic music proved to be a popular way to start the day as alumni from all over the Calgary region stopped in for a bite before heading off to see what fun awaited at more than 70 booths and exhibits for the fifth annual Campus Fair.

Faculties of Medicine and Law Convocation - May 10, 2007

The first Class of 2007 convocated on Thursday, May 10 and comprised 180 new graduates from the Faculties of Medicine and Law.

The Faculty of Medicine's Dr. Marvin Fritzler, PhD'71, MD'74, and recipient of the university's 1988 Distinguished Alumni Award, welcomed the new graduates to the Alumni Association. Click through for more photos and an excerpt of Dr. Fritzler's remarks.

Medicine Hat - April 24, 2007

More than 65 alumni and guests enjoyed a discussion led by archeology professor Gerry Oetelaar on April 24 at the Esplanade in Medicine Hat. Oetalaar has spent his career unearthing the history of the Cypress Hills area and his findings have taken him back 8,000 years to discover the story of Medicine Hat, including how the city got its name and what threatens Police Point Park.

Ottawa - March 18, 2007

Old Man Winter's late-season appearance didn't deter the spirit of more than 80 U of C alumni and their families as they reconnected at Stanley's Olde Maple Lane Farm outside Ottawa on Sunday, March 18. Hosted by the U of C Alumni Association, Sweet Family Fun Day included sleigh rides, barn tours, taffy on the snow and a pancake dinner.

London - February 22, 2007

Twenty-one alumni and U of C vice-provost Thomas Hickerson gathered at the Garrison Public House in London SE1 on Thursday, February 22 for the first-ever official gathering of London alumni. Everyone enjoyed conversation, reconnecting with friends old and new, and food and drink provided by the Alumni Association.
