The final results

Crossing the finish lines was amazing and a huge relief for me! We were
home safe and sound without so much as a scrape (although with a few
bug bites) or an emotional meltdown by any of our team members.

Calgary, Alberta — Fifteen solar powered vehicles cruised to the conclusion of the 2008 North American Solar Challenge fuelled by sunshine and Calgary spirit as thousands of spectators lined the streets and gathered at the finish line at the University of Calgary today to greet cars including the U of C’s own Schulich 1.

We're in Medicine Hat after a hometown hero's welcome for Jeff. His entire family was there with a fabulous barbecue for all. It was so nice to have a cheering crowd instead of me and my flags all alone by the roadside.

Clock ticking for Calgary

July 21, 2008

Regina, Saskatchewan — The race to reach Calgary in the 2008
North American Solar Challenge (NASC) is heating up after rain hampered
the start of Stage 4 from Winnipeg on Sunday and forced many teams to
carefully plot their plans of attack for making it to the finish line
on Tuesday.

Rain days and carnet bonds

July 20, 2008

Solar rayceing, much like any other type of racing, has bad days and good days... Saturday was a bad day for most of the cars as we left Fargo North Dakota under gloomy cloud cover which meant slow going (except of course, the mighty Michigan).

Schulich 1 Alberta bound

July 20, 2008

Winnipeg, Manitoba — University of Calgary’s solar car Schulich 1 will start Stage 4 of the North American Solar Challenge (NASC) in sixth place overall this morning as the race route takes a 90-degree turn to the left along the Trans-Canada Highway, heading towards the finish line at the U of C on Tuesday afternoon. The team moved up one spot in the overall classification after a demanding day of racing on Saturday that saw most vehicles pulled to the finish line at Red River College on trailers after sunshine failed to materialize during the race day and the U of C team slowed due to a flat tire.
How do you revive tired solar car raycers?

July 19, 2008 (Notes from Day 6)

By inadvertently checking them into a hotel that has mini-golf, a swimming pool and karaoke bar! Despite a long day through the endless miles of cornfields, the crew immediately revived when they discovered the mini-golf and there are peels of laughter coming through my window as they engage in some friendly competition. It’s 1030 - I’m bagged but they are still going strong: oh to be young and full of energy!. If nothing else, they will be subdued as we cross the border tomorrow.

What do you do on a non-rayce day? Not set the alarm for 5am……anyone who knows me, knows that I am not ‘little mary sunshine’ in the morning and these early wakeup calls have been a killer!!! …..(I can hear sniggers from certain of my loved ones!).
