Spend an evening with University of Calgary's Astronomers at the RAO. We are hosting an open house so bring the family and learn more about stars, planets, asteroids and beautiful Alberta skies. View celestial objects through our telescopes, including the 1.8 metre ARCT, one of the three largest telescopes in Canada.
The doors to the observatory are open from 8 to 11 p.m. so you can learn more about the telescopes housed on site and have a glimpse at what University of Calgary astronomers can see. If the weather permits we will have some smaller telescopes set out on the terrace with volunteers there to explain what you are seeing.
Visitors are advised to dress warmly, and to bring flashlights (to find your car in the dark!). The RAO is on an exposed hill and the wind can be biting. If it does turn out to be calm and warm, mosquito repellent is a good idea. If you want to take in our lectures we have two speakers whose presentations feature research carried out at the observatory and reviews of current topics in astronomy.
