The University of Calgary Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Music is thrilled to present the principal cellist of the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra Desmond Hoebig in Romantic Cello Sonatas concert on Friday, April 18th and Saturday, April 19th at 8:00 p.m. in the Eckhardt-Gramatté Hall at the Rozsa Centre. This concert will close the 23rd season of the University of Calgary Celebrity Series.
Known as one of the finest instrumentalists, Desmond Hoebig has won numerous awards including first-prize at the Munich International Competition, CBC Talent Competition and Canadian Music Competition. He was also an award-winner in the 1982 Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Born in Vancouver, Hoebig first appeared as a soloist with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra at eight. He then went on to study at the Juilliard School and received his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees.
The programme includes such romantic favourites as Cello Sonata in F major, Op. 5, No. 1 by Beethoven, Fantasy Pieces and Adagio and Allegro by Schumann, and Cello Sonata in g minor, Op. 65 by Chopin.
Hoebig will be joined by Swedish-born pianist Susanne Ruberg-Gordon who has been a faculty member at the Mount Royal College Conservatory since 1991.
A pre-concert lecture by Professor of Musicology and Calgary Herald music reviewer Ken DeLong will take place in the Husky Oil Great Hall of the Rozsa Centre at 7:30 p.m.
