The University of Calgary Department of Music is excited to present Gilbert & Sullivan’s famous operetta Pirates of Penzance from Thursday, Jan. 17 through Saturday, Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. in the University Theatre.
This witty comedy is set in motion when the orphan Frederic is mistakenly apprenticed to pirates instead of pilots by his hard-of- hearing nurse. With the arrival of his so-called twenty-first birthday, he takes leave of his lovable pirate brothers. Despite his affection for the group, he feels compelled to bring them to justice. Added to the mix is the "Very model of a modern Major-General," his beautiful daughters, and an entourage of valiant but timid policemen. Clever to the core, Gilbert & Sullivan's masterpiece is bound to capture audiences as well as plenty of laughs.
Directed by Colleen Whidden, who is currently completing her Masters Degree in Music Education, this 90-minute operetta consists of 38 talented university students and community members and is accompanied by a 16-member live orchestra made up of university performance majors.
