The University of Calgary Department of Music presents international bilingual symposium entitled Centre and Periphery, Roots and Exile: Interpreting the music of István Anhalt and György Kurtág January 22 - 25, 2008 at the Rozsa Centre on University of Calgary campus. Symposium will present two keynote speakers and international guest speakers, as well as concerts presented by five prominent music groups in Calgary including the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.
Does music have a sense of place? What happens when composers move? Do they adjust their style and compositional techniques to meet new circumstances, or do they impose something of their culture and training on their new surroundings?
These are just some of the questions that will be examined in the symposium. The primary objects of study will be the work of composers István Anhalt and György Kurtág. Born in Budapest, Anhalt studied with prominent Hungarian composers such as Zoltán Kodály while Kurtág studied with Kodály’s students Sándor Veress and Pál Járdányi. For both, the turbulent events of their youth had a profound impact on their careers.
The symposium presents two keynote speakers: composer István Anhalt himself and Dr. Rachel Beckles Willson (Royal Holloway, University of London). This is also a bilingual symposium where guest speakers will present their speeches in either English and in French.
Registrations for the symposium is $100 (attendees) / FREE (students). For more information or to acquire registration form, call (403) 210-7576 or visit www.finearts.ucalgary.ca
