MT students well dressed and genuine at recent career fair
By David Cataford
A record number of students - over 1400 students in all - attended the
7th Annual U of C Education Career Fair held on January 23. This year's
fair, hosted by U of C Career Services, the Faculty of Education and
the Education Students' Association, also attracted 73 exhibitors and
feedback from employers was very positive.
The Calgary Board of Education (CBE) was the Career Fair's platinum
sponsor and they are now interviewing students who applied to their
board. "The interviews have been going extremely well, and most
of the students have been very genuine with their answers," says Peggy
Nicholson, teacher staffing and recruitment consultant for the
CBE. "But the CBE remains desperate for teachers especially
language teachers and secondary math/science teachers."
A record number of students also attended the 2007/08 school board
employment information sessions that ran between September 21 and
November 2. Held every Friday afternoon, the sessions gave students the
opportunity to gather valuable facts about respective boards. The
resume review sessions held by Career Services in early January 2008
were completely booked as many students looked to improve their resumes
before applying to various boards.
Next year, Career Services hopes to increase the number of information
sessions it holds and introduce more school boards to Master of
Teaching students. The 8th Annual Education Career Fair is
scheduled to take place in January 2009 at the Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
