Cheering our Olympians

Two of Canada’s 14 medals earned at the 2008 Summer Olympics so far have been captured by the contingent of 20 athletes based at the University of Calgary.

Kinesiology environmental physiologist Jon Kolb, PhD, has spent the last four years examining the challenges that athletes will face in Beijing and coming up with a plan to help them succeed. 

Research symposium showcases talent of future biomedical engineers

Tissue mechanics, stem cells, glaucoma detection and treatments for a number of medical conditions—undergraduate student researchers spoke on an impressive range of topics at the Schulich School of Engineering on August 18.

Faster, higher and stronger

Many of the athletes in this year’s Olympics are wearing sleek, black, space-age suits, that feature stretchy silver bands that criss-cross the back and sides. The suits kind of resemble a superhero outfit and according to Darren Stefanyshyn, they should help Olympians run a little faster, jump a little higher and maybe even be a little stronger.

Bruce Carson to lead Canada School of Energy and Environment

The Canada School of Energy and Environment announced today the appointment of Bruce Carson,  senior advisor to the prime minister, as its first executive director. Carson will take over the helm of the Canada School of Energy and Environment (CSEE) effective Aug. 14, 2008.
