Northern social workers who want to further their careers now have an opportunity to apply for a master’s degree in social work (MSW) at Blue Quills First Nations College, in partnership with the Faculty of Social Work at the University of Calgary and Alberta Advanced Education and Technology.
Applications are now being accepted for a one-time cohort of MSW students who will begin classes in January 2009 and complete their part-time program in the summer of 2010.
To date, the University of Calgary has graduated over 50 students from its undergraduate social work program at Blue Quills, which has been in operation since 2002. The location of this new program, and its focus on issues impacting First Nations and Métis communities, makes it an ideal opportunity for these social workers to continue their education.
“This clinical MSW program combines the best of our accredited master’s program with the specialized skills and cultural programs already developed at Blue Quills, which is recognized as a leading First Nations institution,” said Dr. Gayla Rogers, dean of the Faculty of Social Work.
Dr. Leona Makokis, president of Blue Quills First Nations College, says her community is appreciative of the funding from Alberta Advanced Education, and excited about the possibilities of the new program, which features an Aboriginal focus.
“This master’s program includes an exploration of Cree knowledge and Cree worldview, as well as a concentration on the role of ceremony and relationships in First Nations communities,” said Makokis. “Graduates from this program will strengthen leadership and expertise within our human service settings, and our communities will be stronger as a result.”
The deadline to apply to the program is June 30, 2008. Interested social workers currently holding a BSW degree can contact Blue Quills First Nations College (toll-free) at 888-645-4455.
