Witnesses: Large meteor streaks across Canada sky
Nov. 23, 2008

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan (AP) — Scientists say they're searching for remnants of a meteor that brilliantly lit up the sky before seemingly falling to earth in western Canada.

University of Calgary planetary scientist Alan Hildebrand called it one of the largest meteors visible in the country in the last decade.

Widely broadcast video images showed what appeared to be a speeding fireball Thursday night over Saskatoon that became larger and brighter before disappearing as it neared the ground.

Hildebrand said Friday that he received about 300 email reports from witnesses.

"It would be something like a billion-watt light bulb," said Hildebrand, who also co-ordinates meteor sightings with the Canadian Space Agency.

Alan Hildebrand is an associate professor in the Department of Geoscience at the University of Calgary.

Now is one of those times when running a deficit is right

While many Canadian politicians have held the idea of running a deficit budget as been horribly unfashionable in recent years, it deserves another look in the face of the current economic crisis, writes Ron Kneebone, a U of C economics professor and director of the Institute for Advanced Policy Research in the School of Policy Studies in an op-ed column in the Globe and Mail.

Ron Kneebone is a professor of economics at the University of Calgary and director of the Institute for Advanced Policy Research. His research interests lay mainly in the areas of the macroeconomic aspects of public finances and fiscal federalism.

Canada's ski industry prepares for a rough winter

CALGARY — Canada's ski industry is bracing for one of its toughest seasons as the world economy melts down before the snow flies, giving skiers pause before dropping major coin on a winter vacation.

The industry — which enjoyed a bumper 2007-08 season — is banking on a few positive factors to attract tourists to the slopes, including a weaker Canadian dollar, lower gasoline prices and deals on air fares.

In addition, skiers are starting to get some Olympic fever in advance of the 2010 Vancouver Games, when Whistler will be host to alpine events, said Simon Hudson, tourism professor at the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business. That helps put Canada's ski destinations on the map.

"On the positive side, that, with the exchange rate, the way things are going we may see more Americans come up than expected, but again it depends on the financial situation down there," Hudson said.

The Canadian dollar has tumbled from about 94 U.S. cents at the start of September and is now worth about 82 U.S. cents. Average gasoline prices have fallen 23%.

Simon Hudson is a professor in tourism marketing at the Haskayne School of Business. His ongoing research projects are focused on tourism ethics, film tourism, winter sport tourism, and product placement.
