Province must save more money

Globe and Mail Report on Businesss
Nov. 20, 2008

A commission struck to study the energy-rich province's savings strategy recommended yesterday that Alberta bulk up its Heritage Savings Trust Fund to safeguard its standard of living as revenues from the oil patch decline. Jack Mintz, professor at the University of Calgary and chairman of the commission, said that while he does not expect all of the recommendations to go through, he hopes the report "will have a significant impact in terms of developing a coherent and stable savings strategy [for Alberta]. ... I'm 100 per cent happy with what this report might accomplish."

City must plan for sustainable future

The UDI and Homebuilders position on new communities is at odds with the desire of Calgarians to live in established communities, clearly expressed through independent public opinion surveys commissioned by the city. The UDI and Homebuilders want a plan that respects "choice in the marketplace." We couldn't agree more, which is why we find their position so puzzling. The sad reality is that we have very limited choice in Calgary. For example, vibrant, walkable, transit-oriented suburban developments are common in European cities, but that choice is not available here. In many cases our so-called love affair with the car is actually a matter of forced dependence.
