September Volunteer in Profile
September 24, 2008

Every month CTV partners up with Volunteer Calgary to bring you the stories of those who give the gift of time. This month's Volunteer in Profile saves lives one phone call at a time.
Alyx Nanji has an important job at the Calgary Distress Centre. He's a volunteer phone operator and the calls that come in are often serious. Callers can be suicidal but Alyx is well-trained to provide crisis support. It's not something he takes lightly.

"It's just the realization that they're at their last straw and they're calling you for help and how can you say the right thing to make them not commit suicide or hurt themselves."
The 19-year old is a student at the University of Calgary's Haskayne School of Business and decided to spend his summer volunteering after learning about the importance of social responsibility in one of his classes. In one month, Alyx put in more than 300 hours. It normally takes a volunteer an entire year to achieve that.

Ahead of her class

CALGARY — It was a most impressive introduction.

There, at her Thursday news conference, was the chancellor of the University of Calgary, the dean of the Schulich School of Engineering and the coach of the women's field hockey team along with its 19 members who sat politely then laughed when the photographers began popping their flashes in paparazzi-like frenzy.

It's not often the U of Calgary, or any university, stages a full-out media session for a student athlete, let alone a freshman who has yet to take a class. Then again, Carolina Romeo is not your typical anything.

How to beat the freshman 15

As far as dorm-room fridges go, roomies Colby Wait and Jason Coles have theirs stocked with some pretty stellar options.

They only moved into University of Calgary's Rundle Hall residence on Monday, but the two first-year university students have already filled the fridge with bottled water, yogurt and milk, and plan to load up on fresh fruit as well.
