Change how a country delivers nursing education

When the students of University of Calgary-Qatar (UC-Q) hit the books this fall, they will mark an historic first. For the first time ever, Qataris will have access to an internationally accredited nursing education program. UC-Q is the largest overseas program involving a Canadian university to date, and is the latest step in Qatar’s College of Nursing Project, which aims to provide world-class nursing education in the region.

“There is a growing need in Qatar for professional nurses who can function in important roles and at various levels in the promotion of health, community practice, education, leadership and research,” says Dr. Latifa Al-Houty, chair of the Board of Directors of Hamad Medical Corporation and director of the College of Nursing Project.

UC-Q joins an elite group of universities that are building campuses in Doha. Other universities operating in Qatar include Weill Cornell Medical College, Texas A & M University, Carnegie Mellon University and Georgetown University.

“UC-Q will play a lead role in delivering health care in Qatar,” says UC-Q nursing dean Michael Clinton. “We look forward to collaborating with researchers and students from the Gulf States to positively affect the future of global health care.”
