U of C grad named nurse of the month

Nursing grad Courtney Jewell, BN’05, has been named Calgary Sun/Calgary Health Region’s Nurse of the Month for March. Jewell, who works in ICU at Foothills Hospital, was acknowledged by Calgary’s Zeleny family for her outstanding care. Jewell is the latest of many U of C nursing alumni to have won the recognition award, a Sun tradition for many years. Nurses who have gone beyond the call of duty are nominated by the public.

Agreement with Beijing university renewed

Last month, Tim Goddard, vice-provost (international) met with Zhen Han, the vice-president of Beijing Normal University to renew the academic cooperation agreement the two universities have had since 2002. There have been a number of student exchanges and the two discussed ways of increasing connections between faculty members, such as through collaborative research and visiting scholar arrangements.

Business alum recognized by CA group

The Chartered Accountants of Alberta has given Stephens Allan, BComm’67, a lifetime achievement award in recognition of his contributions to the profession and his community. Allan, vice-president of RSM Richter Inc., has more than 37 years of experience as a CA. His community involvement includes a long-standing contribution to the Calgary Stampede where he has just completed a two-year term as chairman and president. Allan also serves as a director of University Technologies International.

C&C dissertation wins award

The Faculty of Communication and Culture’s Charles Tepperman has been awarded the 2008 Dissertation Award from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies for his dissertation, Communicating a New Form of Knowledge: Tracing the Amateur Cinema League and its Films (1926 - 1954).

Art alumna named immigrant of distinction

The Calgary Immigrant Aid Society has awarded Cecilia Gossen, a second-year PhD student in the Interdisciplinary Program (sculpture/religious studies/architecture), the Immigrant of Distinction Award for her contributions to the arts and culture in Calgary. Gossen, BFA’92, MFA’98, was born in Colombia and came to Canada in 1969.

First clinical skills instructors hired in vet med

The Faculty of Veterinary Medicine has hired its first three clinical skills instructors. Dr. Gordon Krebs from Didsbury and Dr. Darlene Donszelmann of Sundre will join the Department of Veterinary Clinical and Diagnostic Sciences. Dr. Thomas Pittman of Okotoks has joined the Department of Production Animal Health. These instructors join the almost 40 faculty members now in place at the new school.

C&C student wins award for article

Laura Golebiowski, a second-year communication and culture student has received The Petroleum History Society’s 2007 award for article of the year. She originally wrote her paper, a media analysis of the widespread reaction to the discovery of oil in Turner Valley in 1914, for her first-year seminar General Studies 201.

Volunteers needed for Campus Fair

On Saturday, June 14, the University of Calgary will host Campus Fair, the annual university-wide open house featuring entertainment and activities for the whole family. Social Work prof wins lifetime award

Internationally-known social worker and retired University of Calgary professor Gayle Gilchrist James has received a lifetime achievement award. The annual Pulse of Social Work awards honour the contributions of more than 2,000 social workers to the Calgary community.
