A new award celebrating outstanding student leadership will be handed out annually to up to five graduating students, beginning this June.
The award, called the President’s Award for Excellence in Student Leadership, will be the university’s most prestigious student commitment award. Nominations are now being accepted for the inaugural award.
“Outstanding leadership can take many forms,” said U of C President Harvey Weingarten. “We want to recognize those students who have gone above and beyond their academic work and also helped to improve campus and community pride. We will be looking for students who have made significant contributions towards the intellectual, social, cultural and athletic fabric of the university.”
The award is open to both undergraduate and graduate students. Up to five students will receive the award each year. A selection committee including representatives from the Students’ Union and the Graduate Student Association has been established to choose the recipients. The award itself will be designed by students from the Faculty of Fine Arts.
“We know that our students make incredible contributions to the university, inside and outside the classroom,” said Ann Tierney, vice-provost (students). “This award will recognize academic achievement, and it will also celebrate those students who have given their time and energy as volunteers in the community and worked to improve the university experience for their fellow students.”
Nominations must have the consent of the student whose name is put forward for the award and must be accompanied by at least two letters of reference from faculty, staff or fellow U of C students.
