Haskayne maintains top results in Corporate Knights rankings

By Katie Wattie

The MBA and undergraduate programs at the Haskayne School of Business ranked second among 38 MBA programs and 47 undergraduate programs from across Canada in thefFifth annual ranking: Knight Schools released this week by Corporate Knights magazine. The annual ranking measures how well business schools integrate social and environmental impact management into their curricula.

The Haskayne MBA and undergraduate programs ranked ahead of Queens, University of Alberta, University of Toronto and University of British Columbia and only behind the Schulich School of Business and University of Waterloo respectively. Haskayne’s score increased nine percent in the MBA ranking, by far the largest increase in the top five, and 4.5 percent in the undergraduate ranking over last year’s results. Haskayne received full marks for community involvement, student initiatives, faculty research, research institutes, guest speakers and faculty chairs.

“Our focus on the integration of social and environmental impact management into our research and curriculum mirrors the level of activity in leading Canadian companies,” says Leonard Waverman, dean, Haskayne School of Business. “Our role is to prepare graduates for a business environment that is increasingly focused on ethical and sustainable business practices. We are committed to further developing these initiatives.”

Corporate Knights singled out Haskayne’s International Institute for Resource Industries and Sustainability Studies (IRIS) as best practice. The institute’s mission is to create and disseminate leading-edge sustainability research through publications, teaching and various forms of outreach to industry and community audiences. IRIS research focuses on state-of-the-art innovative management practices, their impacts on environmental and social issues and the role they play to move industry towards a more sustainable position.

Haskayne student Mark Blackwell earned special recognition for his work as the founder and current president of the Institute for Sustainable Energy, Environment and Economy Students' Association.
