Stephens Allan, BComm’67, received a lifetime achievement award from The Chartered Accountants of Alberta in recognition of his contributions to the profession and his community. Stephens, vice-president of RSM Richter Inc., one of the largest independent accounting, business advisory and consulting firms in Canada, has more 37 years of experience as a CA. His community involvement includes a longstanding contribution to the Calgary Stampede where he has just completed a two-year term as chairman and president. Stephens also serves as a director of University Technologies International.
David Atkinson, BA’70, MA’71, PhD’75, the former president and vice-chancellor of Carleton University, will step into the same post with the Kwantlen University College in Surrey, B.C., for a five-year term starting in July. A professor of English language and literature, David has written four books and 85 essays and reviews in areas as diverse as Renaissance and Reformation literature, comparative cultural thought, world religions and critical hermeneutics. His fifth book, a critical edition of the work of James Melville, is in press.
Patrick E. Bonertz, BComm’71, retired in June 2007. He and his wife are expecting their second grandchild in July 2008.
Fern Derie, BSc’71, and Larry Gillespie, MSc’71, are proud to announce that their alumnae daughters
Lena Derie-Gillespie, BSW’03, and Donna Derie-Gillespie, BSc’05, will be graduating at the same ceremony on May 8 from the faculties of medicine and law respectively. Fern and Larry went on to complete master’s and PhD degrees respectively and raised their daughters on the family ranch north of Oyen, AB.
John Head, BEd’71, celebrated his 90th birthday in April. He is a proud father of four and grandfather of eight. John lost his wife, Lilah, in 2006.
Betty Jane Hegerat, MSW’73, had her first book of fiction, Running Toward Home, published by NeWest Press in 2006. More recently, a collection of short stories, A Crack in the Wall, was released by Oolichan Books in April 2008. Betty is graduating this month from UBC’s low-residency MFA Creative Writing Program.
Larry Lahren, PhD’76, authored the recently released book Homeland: An archaeologist’s view of Yellowstone Country’s past. The book covers the story of an 11,500-year journey archived in the soil of the Greater Yellowstone Homeland and it is available through www.larrylahren.com.
Dennis Sundgaard, BSc’73, has joined Enerplus as senior project manager, oil sands. His previous experience includes various management positions with Husky Energy within their oilsands and thermal projects as well as extensive experience with Shell Canada on both offshore and conventional oil and gas projects.
Graham Wetter, BComm’78, LLB’92, has been appointed president and CEO of Credit Union Central Alberta Ltd., where he has held a variety of senior management roles.
Kevin Boyles, BPE’88, MKin’98, was named the University of Calgary’s interim athletic director in November and more recently had his term extended for up to a year. Kevin is also head coach of the Dinos women’s volleyball program, which just won a fifth consecutive medal at its eighth consecutive Canadian Interuniversity Sport championship.
Bonnie D. Brossart, BA’89, has been appointed CEO of Saskatchewan’s Health Quality Council (HQC). Previous to this, Bonnie served as deputy CEO for just over three years and co-led the Saskatchewan Chronic Disease Management Collaborative, one of the province’s largest quality improvement initiatives ever undertaken. Before joining HQC, she was a researcher with a health services research agency, a hospital in Calgary and the Saskatchewan Ministry of Health.
James A. Burke, BSc’87, was appointed executive VP and to the office of the president with SNC-Lavalin Group Inc. After first joining the company in 1995, James is responsible for SNC-Lavalin’s airport and mass transit operations worldwide.
Drew Cadenhead, BSc’88, has been appointed vice-president, business development, for Trans-Orient Petroleum Ltd. Between 2004 and 2007, Drew was CEO of TAG Oil Ltd. Prior to holding that position, he was VP of Exploration for BTU Resources, and was a senior geologist at Ulster Petroleum.
Gordon Chambers, BComm’83, recently joined Perth, Australia-based Troy Resources as a director. Gordon is a partner of Lawson Lundell LLP in Vancouver and is head of the firm’s corporate finance and securities group. With over 20 years of experience in the legal sector, Gordon specializes in securities law, public and private security issues, takeover, mergers and acquisitions. He is currently serving on the Securities Legal Advisory Committee of the British Columbia Securities Commission and was formerly on the Securities Advisory Committee of the Vancouver Stock Exchange.
Douglas J. Haughey, MBA’82, is group vice-president of Spectra Energy Transmission. He also serves as director for Saskferco Products Ltd. and Enerflex Systems Ltd., and is on the Institutional Advisory Committee for SAIT’s institutional advisory committee.
Sheila A. Leggett, MSc’87, has been appointed vice-chairperson of the National Energy Board (NEB). Sheila will mentor and coach other NEB members and senior managers in promoting the NEB’s values of integrity, regulatory leadership and accountability.
Gregory J. Lypowy, BSc’89, and his wife Christine are thrilled to announce the arrival of their second son, Eli Morgan Dipchand Lypowy, on Feb. 1.
Tee Ong, BSc’82, BSc’86, MSc’88, has been appointed vice-president of engineering and COO of Torrential Energy Ltd. His career has included positions at Shell Canada, HCO Energy Ulster Petroleum Ltd, ARC Resources and most recently Bonavista Energy Trust.
Robert Pryde, BSc’82, was recently appointed to the board of Bard Ventures Ltd. He is also the vice-president of exploration for Unbridled Energy Corp. From 2004 to 2006, Robert served EnCana Corp. as a geological advisor. He has also held positions with Tom Brown Resources, Norcen Energy Ltd. and Gulf Canada Resources Ltd.
Bill Royan, BComm’89, joined the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan in January as vice-president, focusing on large-scale strategic investments in public companies. He joined Teachers’ from Lehman Brothers in New York, where he held senior roles in its mergers group and its equity strategies unit. Previously, Bill worked in mergers and acquisitions at J.P. Morgan in New York and RBC Dominion Securities in Toronto.
Leif Snethun, BSc’85, the founder of Seeker Petroleum Ltd., has joined Canadian Superior Energy Inc. as vice-president Western Canada. Leif is a professional geologist and a member of APEGGA. He has more than 25 years of industry experience in senior geological, geotechnical and managerial positions.
Colin Christie, BComm’97, has been appointed vice-president, finance and CFO of Calgary’s Veraz Petroleum. Colin received his CA designation in 2000 and CFA designation in 2002. Most recently, he was with Alger & Associates Inc. where he focused on corporate restructuring, valuation and litigation support matters. Prior to joining Alger, Colin was at Deloitte and Touche.
Scott Cochlan, LLB’91, has joined the board of directors at Xcite Energy Ltd. Scott is a partner at Blakes, Cassels & Graydon LLP in the securities group. He has represented senior and junior public issuers in numerous aspects of general corporate law and securities regulatory matters.
Tarik Elsaghir, BComm’96, has been appointed to Triple 8 Energy Ltd.’s board
of directors. Tarik is the president of Cedar Point Capital Inc., a private investment-management company, and he has over 10 years experience managing multimillion-dollar real-estate and software development projects.
Keith Gilchrist, BComm’93, MBA’03, recently joined the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research as director, business development. Keith has spent the last 15 years in research management, business development and intellectual property management roles, working most recently with the National Institute for Nanotechnology as a business development officer.
Lori Hahnel, BA’90, will have her first book, Nothing Sacred, a collection of short fiction, published by Thistledown Press in fall 2009.
Mayron Tsong, BFA’92, MFA’94, will perform a recital at New York’s famed Carnegie Hall on May 30, playing works by Ravel, Haydn, Rachmaninoff and Scriabin, among others. Mayron is an assistant professor of piano and the interim head of keyboard at UNC-Chapel Hill in North Carolina.
Pamela Valentine, BSc’94, MSc’97, PhD’02, was promoted within the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research to the post of director, grants and awards where she will be responsible for a portfolio focused on the investigator and infrastructure programs at AHFMR. Prior to joining the Foundation, Pam held a faculty position in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences at the U of C and membership to the Epilepsy and Brain Circuits Program at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute. Her research focused in the areas of neural plasticity.
Stanley A. Warnock, BEd’91, and his family Zabrina and Nathanyal suffered a devastating house fire last year and are finally in their new home.
Charley Kozdas, BCS’03, has started his own accounting practice in Unionville, ON He is practicing in the areas of both general and forensic accounting.
Robert A. Kramer, BA’06, has been working for Finning (Canada) since graduation as a operations management intern. He is currently in Edmonton overseeing the assembly of Caterpillar off-highway trucks that are subsequently shipped up to Fort McMurray for use in the oilsands.
David James Nielsen, BA’01, was selected as the composer for the soundtrack to the film, Reclaiming the Blade. David has worked on many television movies for Paramount, Warner Bros., A&E and the Sci-Fi Channel. His music was heard in a screening of Man vs. Woman at this year’s Comic-Con Film Festival in San Diego, winning the Best Film Award in the Sci-Fi and Fantasy category. In February 2007, David won the Reel Music 2 Competition for his music to a film clip from the 1921 silent film The Sheik which was performed by the Victoria Symphony, in Victoria, B.C. He currently lives in Los Angeles.
Ahmed Said, BSC’03, has been appointed to the board of directors at Stetson Oil and Gas. Ahmed is president, oil and gas group of Forbes & Manhattan Inc., a Toronto-based private merchant bank, and president and CEO of Vast Exploration Inc. and Longford Corporation, two publicly listed companies on the TSX-V.
Sherry A. Wendt, LLB’04, was recently appointed corporate secretary at Penn West Energy Trust. Before joining Penn West as corporate counsel in 2007, Sherry practiced with Bennett Jones LLP, acting for energy companies on a variety of corporate and commercial transactions and other matters. Sherry has also worked in investment analysis with Investors Group Investment Management Ltd.
