EU-Canada Trade-New policy paper released on eve of Montreal summit

As Canada prepares to greet representatives of the 27 nations of the European Union to talk free trade, The University of Calgary’s School of Policy Studies is pleased to release a paper supporting the summit and the notion of a Canada-EU trade pact.

The paper, “Canada-EU Free Trade: A Building Block for Renewed Multilateralism,” was written by The Honourable Roy Maclaren, former federal international trade minister and current co-chair of the Canada-Europe Roundtable for Business (CERT).

Maclaren’s paper outlines Canada’s role in a variety of global trade relationships and its historical linkages with European Union. With the suspension of the Doha round of negotiations on the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT), Canada now looks to the EU directly to negotiate a bilateral pact. Prime Minister Stephen Harper will greet French President Nicholas Sarkozy and EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso at the October 18 summit in Montreal.

The Middle East: Foreign Policy Considerations for Canada

HRH Prince Talal bin Mohammed of Jordan

Thursday October 23
8:30 - 10:00 a.m.
Alberta Room, Palliser Hotel
133 - 9th Avenue, S.W.
Calgary

The governments of Canada and Jordan are well into the second round of negotiations for a bilateral Free Trade Agreement. If successful, this proposed agreement will provide new opportunities for mining, manufacturing, telecommunications, agriculture and other key industries throughout Canada. While the region is fertile for development and investment, the instability brought on by political and cultural conflict presents distinct challenges. So, what are the options for Canada?

The School of Policy Studies at University of Calgary warmly welcomes HRH Prince Talal bin Mohammed of Jordan for the inaugural lecture in an in-depth series focusing on Canadian foreign policy in the Middle East. Prince Talal is Special Advisor to King Abdullah II of Jordan and Minister to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan in Washington D.C. The Prince has also served as National Security Advisor to both the late King Hussein and to King Abdullah II and as Miltary Secretary to the late King Hussein. He brings to bear an in-depth knowledge of the cultural and political challenges facing a region of increasing economic importance to Canada. Your presence is requested at a morning briefing and discussion with Prince Talal, as he offers his perspective on key foreign policy considerations in the Middle East for Canada.

The School of Policy Studies at University of Calgary brings the discourse on some of the most pressing issues facing our world out from the halls of government and into the public domain.
