Trust Appointment Forms (TP1s)

All researchers who wish to pay employees, research assistants, students, or process fellowships/scholarships through research or trust projects, must complete a Trust Appointment Form (TP1). Changes to a trust appointment must be completed through a Revised Trust Appointment Form.  Trust appointments have a maximum duration of 12 months.

TP1s are generated by the researcher or his/her administrator and then sent to Research Accounting. For main campus, departments should send the TP1 form to Research Accounting staff directly in the ERRB. In the Faculty of Medicine, all TP1 forms are submitted to the Associate Dean (Research) Office, who then submits these to the Medicine Research Accounting office.

Research Accounting verifies the “Appointment Details” section of the TP1.
Three key areas are verified by RA:

  • Project eligibility for the type of appointment being processed
  • Sufficient funds at the time of processing of TP1
  • Project end date

It is the responsibility of the project holder to ensure that an appointment type is eligible for the grant or funding source. In the event of an audit, the supervisor will be expected to prove that a payment of a trust employee is justified (i.e. scholarship, fellowship, research assistant).

Please respect the due dates as outlined by HR for the timely processing of TP1s.
