Handling and storage of biohazardous materials must be approved by the University of Calgary Biosafety Committee prior to commencing research involving biohazardous materials.
To receive approval for the handling and storage of biohazardous materials, a researcher must register biohazardous materials on-line at https://136.159.250.195/BioHazardHandling/index.cfm.
Approval is granted by the University's Biosafety Committee based on a review of the application for compliance with Health Canada's and / or the Canadian Food Inspection Agency's requirements for work with biohazardous materials.
Persons handling biohazardous materials are required to take the mandatory "Introduction to Biosafety" module of the Biosafety course. Course information and registration is available at http://136.159.250.195/SafetyCourse/course/ .

Some granting agencies require a Biohazards Containment Certification signed by the Chair of the Institutional Biosafety Committee, at present, Dr. D. E. Woods, Microbiology and Infectious Diseases, Faculty of Medicine.
