Contracts

The University's research lawyers assist with negotiating research contracts, industry grants,
special project grants and clinical trials. They also provide assistance in interpreting and applying
University policies with regard to research and commercialization of intellectual property.

While university research is traditionally grant-supported, some sponsors choose to contract for
research services when they need to enhance their business competitiveness; produce or
develop a new product, program or service; or satisfy some other requirement. Contracts are
required any time a researcher agrees to perform research on behalf of an outside sponsor -
including private sector, federal and provincial government. Research contracts serve to formalize
the arrangements between both parties.
