The Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) has recently begun conducting Outcomes Measurement Studies, to substantiate the value of CFI investments in research infrastructure. The theme of biomedical engineering was selected for one of the earliest exercises, conducted at the University of Calgary, because of the critical mass of U of C researchers and facilities in this relatively new field impacted by CFI funding. Preliminary reports and on-site expert committee meetings resulted in a final Outcomes Measurement Study, which has become a useful tool in the evolution of biomedical engineering as the top priority for development at U of C.
